Zheng Shanguo (郑山国) is a stingy man who is an expert in calculation. He runs and owns two coffee shops, 899. He is married to Zheng Yuxiang, a free-spending spendthrift, who spends Shanguo's money as soon as he makes it. Despite being henpecked, he also has a temper and shows his ugly side whenever Yuxiang spends his savings on a shopping spree. Shanguo hates gambling and avoids donating money as he is sure that the money he donates would be squandered by the charitable organisations.
Despite his tough exterior, he has a soft heart and is willing to help others through actions rather than money.
He resides at Lentor Plain with his wife and three daughters, Aizhen, Aishan and Aimei. Wishing for a son, he tries many times to get his wife pregnant but is always outsmarted by her.
Zhang Yuxiang (张玉香) is the female boss of 899 and the unofficial head of the Zheng family. Married to Shanguo, she keeps an iron grip on him and spends his money as soon as he makes it. She yearns to climb the social ladder and be a rich 'tai-tai', squandering most of her money on branded bags and clothes.
After persuading her husband to move into a bungalow, she spurlges on expensive furniture, disguising the invoices and receipts to trick him into believing that the items were all imitations. Before moving into the bungalow, Shanguo makes her sign a contract that stated that if she bought any branded goods without her husband's permission, they would sell the house and move back with Qiaomei. Yuxiang as no choice but to comply with her husband's wishes.
She is an enemy of her neighbour, the rag-and-bone man Wu Youli. They often threaten each other with lawsuits and trade insults over seemingly trivial matters.
Shanguo longs to have a son to carry on the Zheng name, but Yuxiang constantly rejects the idea. Eventually, she gets pregnant with a son, and Shanguo is overjoyed, if not over protective of the foetus.
Yuxiang constantly worries about the love life of her daughters and always tries to matchmake them with rich and handsome boyfriends, but always fails in her matchmaking sessions.
She has three daughters, Aizhen, Aishan and Aimei.
Zheng Aizhen (郑爱真) is the eldest daughter of Zheng Shanguo and Zheng Yuxiang. She is known to be impatient and inpulsive, hence her nickname, Tornado (龙卷风).
Due to her personality, she is not a favourite with her employers but has a long list of admirers. She job-hops often but settled into a job as a television news reporter as Clear Sky channel.
She had an obsession with Elvis Presley and his sideburns. Attracted to Fang Kai because of his sideburns, she ends up falling in love with him and makes him chop off his sideburns to test her own love for him.
She has an enemy in her ex-neighbour, Li Liqin, whom she refers to as Idiot (讨厌鬼). Liqin's sister, Lifen, is Aizhen's rival in competing for Fang Kai's heart despite their earlier friendship. Fang Kai and Aizhen get together despite fierce opposition from both Yuxiang and Janet, Fang Kai's mother. Lifen withdraws her claim to Fang Kai soon after. When Yuxiang finds out that Fang Kai's family is rich, she wholeheartedly agrees to their relationship.
Janet, however, schemes to break the couple up and succeeds. In a drunken stupor, Aizhen sleeps with Liqin, who also had a part to play in Janet's scheme. After Liqin's girlfriend goes overseas, Janet bribes Liqin to marry Aizhen. He and Aizhen go from bickering rivals to a loving couple within weeks. Not long after, Liqin proposes to Aizhen, but she rejects him as marriage had never crossed her mind. Yuxiang and Qiaomei vehemently oppose their relationship and Aizhen's relation between Yuxiang gets strained.
Zheng Aishan (郑爱善) is the second daughter of Zheng Shanguo and Zheng Yuxiang. She is a cleanliness freak and hates anything to do with dust and dirt. She is a walking dictionary on germs and bacteria and takes many vitamins a day to 'protect herself from diseases'.
She works as an auditor and is disliked by many of her colleagues for her over-efficiency as she often notices mistakes overlooked by them.
Zheng Aimei (郑爱美) is the youngest daughter in the family. She has low IQ and low self-esteem and is often teased for her slowness (慢三拍) and her habit of hiccuping when upset or under pressure. Despite this, she is an expert in bakery and is often praised by her grandmother for her skills.
After meeting Yue Guang, a psychologist, she finds herself liking him as he lends her a listening ear when she is worried. To get closer to him, she finds a job at his clinic to get closer to him.
She is very close to her father and is often used by him to gain information about her mother's spending sprees.
Shanguo's younger brother and Qiaomei's youngest son, Zheng Shuiguo (郑水国) is constantly getting into trouble. He often gambles and goes womanising, making his mother worry about him. Setting up a sleezy massage parlour, he boasts about being a boss and belittles Qiumei, his tenant, making her pay him in cash for favours he does her.
Despite constantly being bullied by Shuiguo, Shanguo knows his brother well and can see through some of his many schemes, such as disguising his voice to pass off as an Indian on the phone.
He stays in a HDB flat in Bishan with his mother and Qiumei.
